New Demands?
2016
Solo exhibition at Spudnik Press (Chicago)
Installation view
Using prints, neon, and textiles, the works in the exhibition are inspired and adapted from demands, campaigns, and calls to action by the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), historically the largest union representing workers in the women's wear industry.
The works re-produce and re-interpret ephemera like broadsheets, flyers, posters, placards, and advertisements created by the Union between 1909 and 1982, as part of campaigns for better living and working conditions.
Together, the works in the exhibition provide a visual narrative of the Union fighting for and winning some of the most significant rights and benefits for garment workers during the first half of the 20th century, and the struggle to halt the massive losses of labor rights and unionized jobs in the garment industry toward the end of the century.
